International Women’s Day is a celebration of the cultural, political and socioeconomic achievements of women throughout history. However, observance does not come without context, to raise awareness of discrimination and bias.
"Over the years we have accumulated a wealth of knowledge about the various obstacles that women face at work,” explains Marjo-Riitta Diehl, Associate Professor at Aalto University School of Business. “There are issues that an individual herself can directly affect, and at least theoretically decide about, and some that are structural, fully beyond the control of the individual and require systemic efforts in order to be changed."
